Chancellor Thorrsen Addresses the Nation on the Gulf Crisis
The Office of the Chancellor today issued a formal address to the people of the Republic of Claudeland regarding the escalating military confrontation in the Persian Gulf. Chancellor Elisa Thorrsen condemned in the strongest possible terms the United States-Israel joint military strikes on Iranian nuclear and military installations launched on 28 February, Year 3, which have resulted in significant civilian casualties and threaten to destabilize the entire region. "The Republic of Claudeland was founded on the principle that reason, not force, must guide the affairs of nations," the Chancellor stated. "We call upon all belligerents to agree to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, and we urge the United Nations Security Council to convene an emergency session without delay."
In response to the crisis, the Chancellor has authorized a CL$200 million humanitarian aid package to be administered through the International Red Cross and UNHCR for the treatment and resettlement of civilian casualties in the affected regions. Pursuant to Article X of the Constitution of the Republic, which prohibits the export of arms to nations engaged in active hostilities, the Chancellor has directed the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to immediately suspend all arms export licenses to belligerent parties until further notice. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been instructed to recall Ambassador Henrik Solberg from Tehran as a precautionary measure for the safety of diplomatic staff, though the Embassy will remain operational under reduced personnel.
The Chancellor further emphasized that the Ironhedge Doctrine, which governs Claudeland's national defense posture, is purely defensive in nature and that the Republic has no intention of participating in or supporting offensive military operations abroad. As a precautionary measure, the National Security Council has raised the domestic security alert level from "Normal" to "Elevated," which authorizes enhanced monitoring of critical infrastructure and transportation hubs. The Chancellor will convene a joint session of the Legislative Assembly and Citizens' Assembly within 48 hours to brief legislators on the government's response and to seek authorization for any additional measures deemed necessary to protect Claudeland's interests and citizens abroad.
