The Land
Claudeland occupies a peninsula extending roughly north-south, bounded by ocean on three sides and connected to the continental landmass by a broad isthmus in the northeast. 1,100 km of coastline, three major rivers, and peaks reaching 2,800 metres.
30% of land area (~45,000 sq km). Flat to gently rolling terrain from sea level to 200m. Deep alluvial and loess soils, the most fertile in the region. Contains Meridia, Port Calloway, and primary agricultural lowlands. Mild maritime climate: 3-6C January, 19-23C July, 800-1,200mm annual rainfall.
25% of land area (~37,500 sq km). Rolling hills and upland plateau at 200-800m elevation. River valleys, particularly the Thenn and Solvara corridors, create natural transportation routes. Moderate population density. Cooler, wetter: -2 to 3C January, 15-19C July, 1,000-1,500mm rainfall.
25% of land area (~37,500 sq km). Northeast-to-southwest spine peaking at Mount Alder (2,800m). Alpine meadows above 1,800m, dense coniferous forest below. Source of all major river systems. Heavy snowfall above 1,200m November-April. Alpine climate: -8 to -3C January, 8-15C July.
20% of land area (~30,000 sq km). Rain shadow east of the Kelverns. Drier, wider temperature extremes. Grasslands and dryland agriculture. Mineral deposits: copper, zinc, lithium. Continental climate: -5 to 1C January, 21-26C July, only 500-700mm rainfall. Periodic drought.
The longest river at 420 km, originating in the northern Kelverns and flowing southwest to the coast at Meridia. Major shipping artery, navigable for 280 km. The Thenn Estuary is a Ramsar-designated wetland of global significance for migratory birds.
310 km, flowing east from the central Kelverns into the eastern interior basin. Primary water source for Veldmark agriculture. Three major dams for hydroelectric power and irrigation. The Grand Alder Dam is Claudeland's largest.
210 km, flowing west through the most fertile agricultural valley. Viticulture along the upper reaches produces 70% of Claudeland's wine exports. Reaches the coast at Solhaven.
Approximately 1,100 km of coastline. Three major natural harbours: Port Calloway, Meridia, Solhaven. The Thalassan Archipelago (14 islands) offshore. Exclusive Economic Zone of ~85,000 sq km supporting cod, herring, mackerel, and shellfish fisheries.
Natural Heritage
Six distinct ecosystem types, 3,200+ vascular plant species, 78 mammal species, and 240 breeding bird species. 18% of land area is protected as national parks or nature reserves.
Dense broadleaf canopy of Claudeland oak, European beech, and silver birch. Ancient woodland remnants in the Thenn Valley harbour 400-year-old veteran oaks. Primary habitat for woodland birds, dormice, and red squirrels.
Norway spruce and Scots pine to 1,600m, European larch in the subalpine zone, then alpine meadows with edelweiss and gentians. Temperate rainforest fragments in sheltered valleys. Kelvern National Park (3,200 sq km) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Wild olive, mastic tree, and Aleppo pine form dense aromatic maquis on limestone substrate. Fire-adapted species dominate. The UNESCO Solmeri Coastal Settlements sit within this biome. Nesting habitat for the Meridia peregrine falcon.
Feather grass, fescue, and Veldmark sage in a semi-arid continental climate. Claudeland's most distinctive endemic species assemblage. Eastern Steppe Conservation Area (1,800 sq km) protects the largest intact remnant.
River Thenn delta (Ramsar, ~1,200 sq km) hosts 200,000+ waterbirds in autumn migration. River Cael floodplain with freshwater marshes and oxbow lakes. Lake Strand coastal lagoon. Kelvern peatlands store nationally significant carbon.
Kelp forests along rocky coasts, seagrass meadows in sheltered bays, temperate reef systems offshore. Pelagic zone supporting mackerel, herring, cod, and seasonal cetaceans including minke whales and basking sharks.
